1s and 2s – The Search For South Africa’s Best Disc Jockeys

By Vincent Ramatsebe

1s and 2s, also known as ‘Master of Spin,’ is a reality music talent search that airs on SABC 1 every Friday from 19:30 to 20:00 hosted by Thando Thabethe and judged by DJ Naves and SPHEctacula . The show was first introduced to the public airing in 2014  and since then, it has grew on music lovers and also bagged an award for South Africa's Most Watched Music Reality show for 2014.

The show provides a platform for young and upcoming DJs who are struggling to get through the right channels of their careers. Though there are critics about the judging panel, DJ Naves & SPHEctacula being Hip-Hop DJs, they have been shut by the weekly guest judges the shows provide. Experienced Producers & DJs such as; Charles Webster, DJ Fresh, Dj Shimza etc. have had a visit on the shows to share their light when it came to judging. The show also provides challenges where DJs need producing skills to proceed to the next level of the competition. The Master of Spin will win an international CD release and R100 000 worth of DJ production gear.

Last year’s competition was won by DJ Mshega, who is signed to DJ Clock’s label Am-Pm Productions. There was some dissatisfaction surrounding the outcome of last year’s edition, the issue being the show’s description states that it is for ‘unsigned’ deejays, whilst 1/3 of them were signed, including the winner. But the producers of the show have rectified that mistake and the deejays in the top 10 this year are all unsigned.  This year’s front-runners are Zola from the group Emoboys and a producer from Free State who’s track ‘Better Days’ has been doing exceptionally well on national radio, Prince Kaybee.

In conclusion, the show is a great initiative, especially with so many talented DJs who want their talents exposed to the world. With the television exposure, with young, talented producers and DJs showcasing their talents, our House Nation is definitely on the move.
